Known for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence, tenor Robert Clark is quickly making a name for himself in the operatic world.
Last season, Robert sang Beppe in I Pagliacci with Edmonton Opera, Flask in the Canadian premiere of Moby Dick with Calgary Opera where he also covered the role of Ahab. He also sang Jaquino in Fidelio with Edmonton Opera and Tamino in The Magic Flute with Highlands Opera Studio. This season Robert sang Macduff in Macbeth with Pacific Opera Victoria and Roderigo in Calgary Opera’s Otello. Robert was also the cover for Charlie in Mary’s Wedding with Pacific Opera Victoria. Upcoming engagements include Narraboth in Salome with Edmonton Opera and the Steersman in The Flying Dutchman with Calgary Opera.
In 2010, Robert performed his debut main-stage role of Normanno from Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor with Calgary Opera and Al in Edmonton Opera’s The Barber of Barrhead.
Previous operatic performances includes roles in Street Scene, L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, Gianni Schicchi, A Game of Chance, Frobisher and has toured with the Calgary Opera Emerging Artist Program as Al in Ann Hodges’ The Barber of Barrhead and The Prince in Rob Herriot’s Cinderella.
Robert has been a recipient of many prestigious awards and scholarships including a grant from the Winspear Fund to aid in his studies at the University of Western Ontario. He was a recipient of the Johann Strauss Foundation Scholarship for Advanced Studies in Austria where he furthered his training in Salzburg with world-renowned Canadian soprano, Edith Wiens.
Robert earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Alberta in 2006 and went on to complete a Masters of Music in Literature and Performance at the University of Western Ontario with Theodore Baerg in 2008. While there, Robert received the London Opera Guild Scholarship, the Western Graduate Research Scholarship, an Ontario Graduate Scholarship and was a finalist in the London Music Scholarship Foundation Competition. After his Masters degree he was invited to spend 2 years in the Calgary Opera Emerging Artists Development Program.
Robert is also an active voice teacher, adjudicator and father of four beautiful children.
